জনস্বার্থ মামলাটি করেছিলেন যাদবপুর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের রিসার্চ স্কলার এস মুরুগানান্থাম। সেই মামলার শুনানিতে মাদ্রাজ হাইকোর্টের প্রধান বিচারপতি ইন্দিরা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় ও বিচারপতি এম সুন্দরের বেঞ্চ বলেছে, এ ধরনের জনস্বার্থ মামলা শুধু আদালতের মূল্যবাণ সময় নষ্ট করে।
নোটের উপর এমকে গান্ধীর নামের আগে 'মহাত্মা' কথাটি লেখার সাংবিধানিক বৈধতা নিয়ে প্রশ্ন তোলা হয়েছিল পিটিশনে। বলা হয়েছিল, সংবিধানের ১৪ ও ১৮ ধারা লঙ্ঘন করছে সরকার।
